GFCI Locations in Multi-Family, Commercial, Industrial, and Public Facilities

 

·         The 2008 NEC has made modifications and changes that clarify where GFCIs are required.

·         For multi-family dwellings, each unit with a separate entrance at ground level must have at least one exterior accessibleGFCI receptacle located no higher than 6 ½ feet above the ground. Any 20 square foot or larger balcony, deck or porch of a dwelling unit that is accessible from within that unit must have at least one GFCI receptacle available within 6 ½ feet above and within the perimeter of the space.

·         In non-dwelling units, all bathroom 125V 15 and 20 amp receptacles within six feet of an outside edge of a sink must be GFCI-protected.
All 125 V 15 and 20 amp receptacles in any area with a sink and permanent facilities for a food preparation and cooking must be GFCI-protected, including such defined spaces within offices or industrial facilities. Also, GFCI protection is required for electric drinking fountains.

·         All outdoor 125 V 15 and 20 amp receptacles located outdoors at non-dwelling units, including those on rooftops, must beGFCI protected.

·         “Beside location, there are two other concerns addressed in the 2008 NEC, both relating to grade,” pointed out Bill Grande, Director of Safety Products, Leviton Manufacturing Company. “For residential construction 15A and 20A 125V receptacles, including GFCIs, have to be tamper resistant. And all receptacles in damp or all wet locations must be weather resistant and listed as such, including GFCIs.”
